Position Overview: Student Unions & Activities (SUA) is accepting applications for the position of Retail Manager. This position oversees the day-to-day retail operations of the West Bank Skyway Gopher Express West and Coffman Memorial Union Concessions. The Retail Mamanger is responsible for the Gopher Express West and SUA Concessions operating budgets, totaling $590K. The Retail Manager also supports student development by supervising student employees in both areas who assist with the day to day operations of the stores. The Retail Manager reports to the Retail Coordinator.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
• Hire, supervise, train, mentor, discipline, and evaluate the Gopher Express West and Concessions student employees • Develop, implement, and monitor budgets for Gopher Express West and Concessions • Establish and maintain relationships with external product and services vendors • Recommend, implement, and evaluate retail sales using industry trends and point-of-sale reports • Develop and propose short and long term goals. Create implementation and evaluation strategies, maintaining and improving daily and long-term operation
Specific Responsibilities: 45% Oversee operations
Open and/or close Gopher Express West when Student Management staff are not available; this includes cash operations and security responsibilities
Establish and maintain procedures relating to exceptional customer service standards, clear and timely communication, and protection from operational losses
Recommend, implement, and monitor budgets for the Gopher Express West and Concessions, totaling $590K
Ensure compliance of health, occupational safety, and food safety regulations
Determine and monitor product mix, using internal and external resources
Monitor daily, monthly, and annual sales and related systems and reports
Coordinate marketing efforts by working with SUA Marketing and vendors to identify, implement and monitor promotions
Coordinate with Student Activities (SEE) staff on operations and promotions
Ensure accurate and appropriate inventory levels, clear communication with vendors, and correct resolution of ordering/receiving problems
Arrange and conduct inventories and audits
Assist in maintaining and overseeing use of retail technology: POS software (CounterPoint)
40% Develop and supervise 5FTE student employees (26 students)
Prepares students for the next stages of their lives by introducing educational and developmental components to the student employee positions, providing a more holistic educational experience at the University
Develops and implements experiential and reflective development opportunities based on the University of Minnesota Student Development Outcomes
Monitors students’ progress in the Student Development Outcomes, provides day-to-day coaching and feedback
Performs employee performance and Student Development Outcomes evaluations
Trains intermediate- and advanced-level employees to work independently in Retail Manager’s absence
Interviews, hires, evaluates, trains, mentors and discipline student employees
Fosters a spirit of teamwork and unity among staff members
Develop, schedule, and monitor student employee training programs, manuals, and materials
Develop, input, and monitor daily schedules using the WhenToWork scheduling application
Assign and monitor tasks and duties to entry-, intermediate-, and advanced-level employees
Appropriately communicate organization information through department meetings, one-on-one meetings, email, IM, area Google site, and regular interpersonal communication
Assists in coordinating semi-monthly large group meetings with Student Manager staff for the entire Retail area
Lead employees to meet the area expectations for productivity, quality, and goal accomplishment
May require work outside normal work hours (e.g. evenings and weekends) to resolve staffing, scheduling, or operational issues
Cover employee breaks and shifts as necessary
10% Assist with on-going evaluation and long-range planning of Gopher Express West and Concessions
Develop and propose long-range goals. Create implementation strategies
Proactively seek opportunities for increasing sales and efficiencies through new initiatives and technologies. Propose improvements
Identify capital purchase needs, including replacing equipment, adding new equipment (to increase efficiencies or revenue)
May participate in or chair SUA-wide planning committees, cross-functional committees within SUA charged to evaluate specific policies/practices and propose improvements
5% Other duties as assigned
*This position is represented by a bargaining unit AFSCME Clerical & Office. Dues or fair share deductions will be made.
Salaray range: $19.04 - $28.45 USD/hour
High school diploma/GED and four years operations and/or student support experience.
Training/education may be substituted for some of the years of experience.
Excellent organizational skills and effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work with diverse groups of people.
Position requires some work on evenings and weekends.
Experience working in a large, complex organization.
Experience with retail point-of-sale computer systems a plus.
Working knowledge of PC computers; proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, e-mail and web browsers; Project management experience.
Willingness to get involved in the unexpected; A collaborative, team oriented work style; Self-motivated.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, to take initiative and work independently with good judgment about when to seek direction, to keep deadlines.
