Facilities Services works to maintain a campus built environment that is conducive to teaching, learning and research. We strive to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the campus community. Facilities Services is comprised of the following units: Campus Recycling and Refuse Services, Custodial Services, Environmental Services, Grounds Operations, Shops, Quality Assurance & Customer Service, Sustainability and Engineering Services and People's Park.

Responsibilities
LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE - Operates trucks (over 3 tons), riding mowers, tractor-powered attachments such as flail mowers, fertilizer spreaders, front-end loaders, scrapers, backhoes, earth augers, trenchers, Dingo and attachments, aerator, and mini-excavator etc.
- Operates water trucks, Parking lot Sweepers, Bobcat and all of it's attachments, M30, walk behind sweeper.
- Under direct supervision of a tree specialist, operates hi-ranger truck, chipper and stump grinder.
- Maintains and cleans equipment used daily.
- Perform demolition: soil preparation, including amendment, rototilling and grading; dig to repair header boards; renovate turf-scalp, overseed top dress and/or lay sod.
- Assist with installation, repair and/or relocation of grounds furnishings; erosion control.
- Assist with installation and repair of irrigation systems.
- Work with the Fire Mitigation team to perform log removal/relocation.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES - Complete work orders logs and enter time spent on work orders in Maximo.
SAFETY - Ensure that the department's safety requirements are adhered to.
- Attend job-related and safety training as required.
MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES - Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to read, write and follow oral/written instructions provided in English.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to interact in a positive manner with the campus community, including students, building managers, Landscape Services sub-units, academic personnel, and craft personnel, in a multicultural environment.
- Ability to work in an environment where there is high exposure to dust, pollens, and other allergens.
- Ability to climb and work from a 14 foot stepladder; to lift up to 100 lbs.
- Ability to withstand extensive standing, stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling and one (1) year of experience in the operation of medium to heavy power-grounds equipment such as ride-on mowers, backhoes, mini-excavator, sweeper, M30, tractors, turf sweepers, dump trucks and associated attachments, equipment for turf mowing, aerating, dethatching, and fertilizer spreading or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven experience, ability and/or training in routine and preventive maintenance of medium to heavy power-grounds equipment including performance of minor repairs, including oil, belt and filter changes, lubrication, replenishing fluid levels when necessary, tires and general cleaning.
- Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively utilize related hand and power tools.
- Proven ability to understand and adhere to trade accepted irrigation, horticulture and arboriculture maintenance standards.
- Ability to effectively perform repetitive tasks while maintaining awareness of surroundings for continuous periods (up to 4 hours) on a daily basis.
- Ability to follow job-related instructions.
- Must know the safety procedures necessary for safe operation of the equipment s/he operates under general supervision.
- Demonstrated expert level knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment used in grounds work and safe work practices.
- Must be able to work cooperatively in a group setting.
- Ability to work outdoors in fluctuating and/or extreme weather conditions.
- Must be available to respond to emergencies and work occasional overtime and on weekends/holidays.
- Must adhere to Facilities Services' work rules and Code of Conduct.
- Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of mechanical concepts in the area of hydraulics, electrical belts and pulleys, P.T.O.'s, gasoline and diesel engines, air and water cooled engines.
Salary & Benefits
This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience within the range of $23.58-$35.72 (Step 1.0 - Step 22.0).

- Facilities Services is hiring for two Laborer/Gardener - Equipment Operators.
- This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Service Unit (SX) between the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
